Why play online poker?
Some people play for the thrill of it. They love the rush that comes from looking down at pocket aces after another player goes allin. Others play because they love a challenge. Out lasting hundreds or even thousands of players to take down a tournament is not an easy task. Most often people that play for these reasons can afford to lose and losing doesn’t affect their quality of life. If you’re like me, the reason you want to play online poker is to win enough money to improve the quality of life for you and your family. Winning at online poker, or live poker for that matter, can provide a better quality of life that a regular job can.
If you want to win enough money playing online poker you need to consider “risk vs reward”.
For example:
Let’s play a single table tournament where the buy-in is $5 and the entry fee is $1. ($6 total) $5 goes to the prize pool and $1 goes to the house.
On some sites a full table consists of 9 players, on others its 10.
For this example we’ll use 10.
The prize pool for this tournament would be $50. ($5 x 10 = $50)
On a single table tournament the payout is usually top three places.
First place pays 50% of prize pool. ($25)
Second place pays 30% of prize pool. ($15)
Third place pays 20% of prize pool. ($10)
OK now let’s assume you had a good run and managed to take first place. So you won $25. Now let’s subtract the buy in and the entry fee, total 6$. That leaves you with $19. This is what you actually won. Now let’s determine the “risk vs. reward” factor.
In order to determine the “risk vs reward” take the amount you can potentially win and divide by the buy in and entry fee. In this case it would be as follows:
Max potential winnings: $19 Total buyin + entry fee: $6
= 3.17 to 1
So this means that for every dollar you risk you can potentially multiply it by 3.17 to 1.
Now lets play a larger tournament, one with a guaranteed prize pool. FullTilt currently has a $1 buy-in tournament with a guaranteed prize pool of $10,000. It pays up to 1080 places and top prize is at least $1,599.
So lets find the “risk vs reward” for this tournament.
Max potential winnings: $1,598 Total buyin + entry fee: $1
= 1598 to 1
So this means that for every dollar you risk you can potentially multiply it by 1599 to 1.
"Risk vs reward" is essential when building a bankroll. Its very important to maximize your earning potential.
